Automatic Number Plate Recognition or ANPR is a specialised CCTV system that can read the number plate of a moving vehicle using optical character recognition (OCR) software. The systems are deployed by police authorities to catch vehicles being driven illegally, too fast or without the correct documentation or even if the registered owner is banned from driving. Private owners use ANPR to track unwanted visitors, open barriers to known vehicles or track the arrival and departure of vehicles. This list of applications is as long as the user’s imagination.
